U.S. stocks staged a sharp relief rally to start the holiday-shortened week, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average closing above 52,000 for the first time on Monday as Alphabet made its debut as an index component and twin political catalysts eased pressure on equities.

The Dow climbed roughly 0.7%, or about 360 points, to a record close near 52,120. The S&P 500 advanced 1.1%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite jumped 2.07%, or 522.53 points, to finish at 25,820.15. Both broader benchmarks snapped five-session losing streaks.

Alphabet's Dow Debut Adds $168 Billion in Market Cap

Alphabet (GOOGL) replaced Verizon in the Dow Jones Industrial Average effective Monday, and the Google parent celebrated in style. Shares rose more than 4%, adding roughly $168 billion in market capitalization on the session and instantly establishing the company as one of the most heavily weighted names in the price-weighted index. Verizon, the displaced component, slid about 7%.

The reshuffle gives the 30-stock Dow meaningful exposure to artificial intelligence and digital advertising for the first time in years, and analysts have flagged that Alphabet now carries roughly seven times the index weighting that Verizon previously held.

Supreme Court Rules Trump Cannot Fire Fed Governor Lisa Cook

A major political catalyst hit before the open. The Supreme Court ruled Monday that President Trump cannot remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook while her lawsuit challenging the August 2025 firing attempt proceeds. The high court upheld a District Court preliminary injunction protecting Cook, who had argued that the attempted removal was not "for cause" as required by statute and that she was denied pretermination process.

Cook was the first Federal Reserve governor in the central bank's 111-year history that any president has attempted to remove. The ruling is being read by markets as a significant reinforcement of Fed independence, easing concerns about political interference in monetary policy that had weighed on rate-sensitive sectors in recent weeks.

U.S.-Iran Hostilities Pause Sparks Risk-On Move

The second tailwind came from geopolitics. The United States and Iran reportedly agreed over the weekend to halt the tit-for-tat attacks that flared days earlier, clearing the way for peace talks to continue. The de-escalation triggered a broad risk-on move and helped semiconductor and megacap technology names lead the tape.

Tesla shares surged more than 7% in Monday's session as part of a wider tech relief rally. The VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) gained more than 3% after dropping as much as 3.1% intraday, with Astera Labs, KLA and Applied Materials each rallying more than 11% to lead the chip-sector reversal.

Holiday-Shortened Week, Jobs Report Pulled Forward

Traders now turn to a compressed economic calendar. The June nonfarm payrolls report has been moved up to Thursday from its usual Friday release because U.S. equity and bond markets will be closed for the full session Friday, July 3, ahead of Independence Day falling on Saturday, July 4. Regular trading resumes Monday, July 6.

With the Fed's policy stance back in focus following the Cook ruling and another labor print on deck, payrolls Thursday is shaping up as the week's most consequential macro event for both equities and Treasuries.
